Penis Size And The Statistical Normal Distribution Curve

Men like to talk and think about their penis size but not so much about maths, however, we can combine the two. Let’s talk about the penis size from a statistical point of view.

First, we can assume that like anything else in statistics, penis size follows the curve of “normal distribution”. This means that when a number of erect penises are measured and the results put in a graph from the smallest sizes to the largest according to how often each size occurred, we would get a curve that is bell shaped. There would be two ends with just a few very small and very large penises and a lot of average sized ones in the middle of the chart. That is if penis size is distributed normally like most other things in statistics.

In this case if we know what is the mean size, the smallest and the largest, we can estimate the whole chart and see how many men have either bigger or smaller penises than us. According to the Ansell study, the average dick size worldwide is 5.877 inches and the standard deviation is 0.825 inches. These numbers give us the table below:

is my dick too small?

According to these numbers, if your size is 6 inches, you are above average and more than half of the men out there have smaller members than you.

The largest penis in the world is (unofficially) 13.5 inches. However, when we look at the chart we can see that even a penis that is 12 inches long should only occur once in as much as 17,321,537,028,348 men. That is five thousand times more than the entire male population today and over three hundred times more than all the men who have lived on the planet from day one.

These numbers clearly show that penis size is not distributed normally, there are too many men with too large penises to (and probably too many with tiny ones as well). The numbers do look more reasonable in the middle of the chart.

What can cause this? Maybe it depends on who is measuring. It is true that when men measure and report their own size, they tend to exaggerate quite a bit. This can even be seen by reading certain forums or web comments. Too many men there seem to have 8 or 9 inch penises, however looking at the chart, it should be quite rare. We can come to three different conclusions:

  1. Normal distribution doesn’t apply to penis size, not even in the middle.
  2. Those who comment online have larger than average penises.
  3. Commenters lie about their size.

Humans are known to have larger penises than other primates in both proportion as well as in general. Scientists think that this may be due to us walking upright. This resulted in the rearrangement of the vagina and shorter penises were no longer able to reproduce. However, human vagina is still only 3-6 inches deep, so that’s not the excuse for enormous penises. In fact, too much length can cause problems as well.

But it’s not just those with big penises who may face a reproductive challenge, those on the other end of the curve, with exceptionally small penises are still worse off.

In conclusion, whether or not general statistical curve applies to penis size, it is still better to be in the middle than on either ends.
